LGBTQ+ Disclosure at the University of Cambridge

“Out” at Cambridge: Investigating students and staff’s LGBTQ+ identity disclosure and concealment at the University of Cambridge

Researchers: Prof. Sarah Franklin (PI), Elisabeth T. Sandler, MSc, MPhil

The 2018 Stonewall Report on discrimination towards LGBTQ+ students at British universities suggests that 42% disguise or conceal their LGBTQ+ identities due to fear of hostile or unwelcome reactions to disclosure. Based on this report, we want to explore how students and staff at the University of Cambridge manage their LGBTQ+ identities within the university community. Data will be collected via up to 60 semi-structured interviews.

This research will be used to pursue policy change at the university to make Cambridge a safer space and to keep supporting and enabling resources that already make a difference to LGBTQ+ identifying students and staff.
